Uros at tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011
November 14, 2011 – January 14, 2012

tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE is proud to present Uros by Grimanesa Amorós.

Off the coast of Puno, Peru are the Uros Islands. They are floating islets made of totora reeds grown in Lake Titicaca. The pre-Incan Uros, who live on these forty-two self-fashioned floating islands, build everything out of this material – from houses to boats to watch towers. Amorós created Uros to reflect the natural elegance of sea foam and totora reeds.

tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE is a Frank Gehry designed US flagship store featuring all Issey Miyake collections.

LOCATION tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE, 119 Hudson Street at N. Moore, New York City

tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE, opened in 2001, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary as the site for the Miyake US headquarters and flagship store carrying all Issey Miyake collections. Featuring a titanium “intervention” or sculpture by Frank Gehry that winds its way through the space, tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE acts as a retail store, laboratory, and atelier; a place for new talent, the unexpected, and the excitement that lies within the power of creation. For these reasons, tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE often hosts up-and-coming and established artists, as well as lectures, and performances.

AURORA

Multimedia Lighting Sculpture by Grimanesa Amorós

Aurora is a series of Mix Media Light Sculptures. I found it’s original inspiration from the natural phenomenon of what is known as the Northern Lights.

Light is one of my primary materials because it creates presence without physicality. In many occasions, it can be easily taken for granted, since much of what humans perceive comes from light, yet even that which is apparent can be mysterious. I’m always looking for the instance when light, in its changing forms, makes us contemplate and experience an ordinary circumstance in a different way.

tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE is the worldwide flagship store for Issey Miyake. It houses all the Miyake collections under one roof for the first time, principally the Issey Miyake women’s and men’s collections, Issey Miyake Fete, A-POC, HaaT, Me and Pleats Please. Located in the downtown Manhattan neighbourhood from which it takes it’s name, tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE is a uniquely modern boutique, set against the backdrop of a landmark cast-iron building. A titanium sculpture by Frank Gehry winds its way through the space that doubles as a creative venue of artist collaborations, exhibitions and events.
