No Longer Empty – Tapiz

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Tapiz is presented by No Longer Empty in collaboration with Tapestry and El Museo Del Barrio as part of the public art exhibition Weaving In & Out. Tapestries are hanging, multicolored, woven histories. In Tapiz, I am weaving the faces of 125th street together to represent a merging of past present and future. People from diverse backgrounds are converging in Harlem, which will generate a new cultural and economic renaissance.

Opening: June 15th 6pm – 9pm

Hot Art Basel – La Recolección

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

LA RECOLECCIÓN, a site specific lighting sculpture for the facade of Hot Art Basel. The concept behind the piece reflects the temporary gathering of art, collectors, galleries, and artists. I see the parking lot as a giant magical toy dispenser, and for some coins you can get your prize. The drawings are based on actual real coins, some of which are swiss francs.

Susana Baca has been a key figure in the revival of Afro-Peruvian music within Peru (see, for example, dancers from the Perú Negro troupe, as well as “Festejo” music), which, like the culture that produced it, had previously been little recognized, but which is now regarded as an important part of Peruvian culture. Baca has contributed much to its international popularity, which began in 1995 with the release of the compilation CD The Soul of Black Peru. The album, which features the Baca song “Maria Lando”, was released by the Luaka Bop record label, which belongs to ex-Talking Heads frontman David Byrne.

Admission is $15

VOLTA NY, Club 7W Talks Lounge, 7th floor
7W 34th Street, New York, NY 10016

A panel consisting of several contemporary artists from Latin America and a single critic moderator, this presentation will be structured along the lines of a newspaper Advice Column, with questions being asked anonymously by the audience members, several preselected “guests” and the artists themselves.

VOLTA NY is the American incarnation of the successful young fair founded in Basel in 2005. VOLTA NY was conceived to continue the original mandate to create a tightly-focused, boutique event that is a place for discovery and a showcase for current art production and relevant contemporary positions—regardless of the artist or gallery’s age.

VOLTA NY is an invitational show, organized by art critic and Fair Director Amanda Coulson, to complement the offerings across town at The Armory Show, with whom VOLTA NY shares the VIP and Talks Programs and shuttles to and from both fairs. By putting the focus back on artists through exclusively featuring solo projects, VOLTA NY promotes a deep exploration of the work of its selected projects, an opportunity for discoveries that move beyond those afforded by a traditional art fair.
