Uros at tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011
November 14, 2011 – January 14, 2012

tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE is proud to present Uros by Grimanesa Amorós.

Off the coast of Puno, Peru are the Uros Islands. They are floating islets made of totora reeds grown in Lake Titicaca. The pre-Incan Uros, who live on these forty-two self-fashioned floating islands, build everything out of this material – from houses to boats to watch towers. Amorós created Uros to reflect the natural elegance of sea foam and totora reeds.

tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE is a Frank Gehry designed US flagship store featuring all Issey Miyake collections.

LOCATION tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE, 119 Hudson Street at N. Moore, New York City

tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE, opened in 2001, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary as the site for the Miyake US headquarters and flagship store carrying all Issey Miyake collections. Featuring a titanium “intervention” or sculpture by Frank Gehry that winds its way through the space, tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE acts as a retail store, laboratory, and atelier; a place for new talent, the unexpected, and the excitement that lies within the power of creation. For these reasons, tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE often hosts up-and-coming and established artists, as well as lectures, and performances.

Paul and Lulu Hilliard Museum at University of Louisiana at Lafayette

Friday, August 12th, 2011
Paul and Lulu Hilliard Museum
University of Louisiana at Lafayette
Lafayette, Louisiana

The Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum in Lafayette, Louisiana is Acadiana’s architectural landmark and the largest art museum between Houston and New Orleans. The Museum features a variety of changing exhibitions and a continuing schedule of lectures and programs.

OPENING Reception August 19th, 2011
LOCATION Paul and Lulu Hilliard Museum at University of Louisiana at Lafayette

Uros House, a lighting sculpture by artist Grimanesa Amorós, will be on view at the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum from August 6th through the end of the year. Recently shown in Times Square, the sculpture was presented as part of the 2011 Armory Show.

Uros House, made of polyethylene, steel, metal and computer controlled LEDS, was inspired by structures built by the Uros Indians in Peru. The pre-Incan Uros, who live on forty-two self-fashioned floating islands in Lake Titicaca, build everything out of totora reeds, a sub-species of the giant bulrush sedge. According to Amorós, who was born and raised in Peru, the Uros House sculpture “embodies the beauty of sea foam, while maintaining the traditional technique and shape of the Uros islands houses. The structure will seemingly arise from the ground as if it were one with the earth.”

Festival APART | Golden Uros

Friday, July 1st, 2011

GRIMANESA AMORÓS

Golden Uros is a site-specific lighting sculpture installation.

APART 2011 is the 2nd edition of the International Festival of Contemporary Art. It will travel throughout the Alpilles for six weeks.

July 7th – August 17th

Opening Reception:
Thursday, July 7th, 7 PM

Chapelle de la Persévérance
Tarascon, France

For more information visit www.festival-apart.com

Living in Lima, Amorós would travel throughout Peru whenever she could. Amorós’ exposure to the historical sites of the country led her to research the Incan Empire. The Incas’ use of gold and religious beliefs contributed considerably to their way of life. They would make masks of deities forged from pure gold as a form of worship.

The population living on the Uros Islands are descendants from the Quecha and Aymara, Puno being the only place in Peru where both indigenous groups are living unanimously. Walking on the totora reeds of the Uros Islands – the material the islands are constructed from – Amorós was struck by the sense of weightlessness and spiritual connectivity achieved on these floating islands.

Golden Uros explores the duality of ancient beliefs and universal spirituality by incorporating the imagery of Amorós’ golden self-portrait as a deity.
