Studio Stefania Miscetti is pleased to present the Fourth Edition of the video review SHE DEVIL, which, in continuity with the previous editions, this year welcomes a greater number of curators, from the youngest to the most established, proposing itself as an open platform towards new and different experiences.

SHE DEVIL is the name of a heroine in the Marvel Comics Universe, Shanna the She Devil, and title of the famous 1989 Susan Siedelman’s film. In this circumstance it alludes, in a playful manner, to the diabolic and bizarre spirit with which the artistic experience investigates the day-to-day life. In continuity with the previous Editions of the review, the videos represent the female points of view and place the various fields of the video art research in direct contrast with one another. The purpose of the initiative is to stress, at times using irony, at times realism, the collective consciousness on themes such as female identity, the body as repository of representation and meaning, and personal experiences on universal dimensions, even when the very intimacy of the artists is at the forefront of their works.

The works presented in this edition, selected from both Italian and International sources – from Africa to Americas, to Asia, to Europe – investigate more specifically the discourse on women and power, vulnerability, the relationship with identity, image, body, tradition, the role assumed and undergone in both domestic and professional contexts. Through the combination of diverse expressive languages and perspectives, the exhibition aims to investigate a complex and pregnant subject, and to present video works, never showed in Rome before, which on the whole are able to stress a strong and proactive response to the present time.

Grimanesa Amorós – Preoccupation, 2008, 1’12’’

Curator, Manuela Pacella

SILICONE AND MIX MEDIA SCULPTURES BY GRIMANESA AMORÓS
January 29 – February 1, 2010

Precious metals, like gold and silver, were once the basis of all economic transactions.  Now we are at the mercy of artificially inflated markets and systems of exchange.  The accepted value of goods or services is no longer certain and concrete; everything is uncertain and ephemeral.  We float in a bubble of speculation; a thin veneer, inflated by hot air.

Son Espace is a young gallery founded in 2005 in the town of Palafrugell near Girona. It’s located in an old house in the town centre that still preserves its original layout and features. Artists who exhibit in the gallery can utilise all of the available space for solo exhibitions, or show their work exclusively in one of the gallery’s rooms, allowing an open and intimate dialogue between artist, space and viewer. The house has got three floors, two of them for exhibitions and the other for storage and an artist studio. The total exhibition space is approximately 150 m2. We are thrilled to announce CIRCA Puerto Rico ‘10, fifth edition of the premiere art event in the Caribbean, returning to the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan on a new date: from January 29 through February 1st, 2010.

The Lab Rogersmith – La Incubadora

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010
Due to overwhelming Public respond, LA INCUBADORA has been
extended to February 23rd, 2010.
LA INCUBADORA
A SCULPTURE LIGHTING INSTALLATION BY GRIMANESA AMORÓS
January 14 – February 23, 2010

The LAB (for installation + performance art), in association with SLAG Gallery, has been converted by Grimanesa Amorós’ into “LA INCUBADORA”, which will be featuring “You Cannot Feel It… I Wish You Could” a sculpture lighting installation arising out of her personal experiences during and immediately following her pregnancy with her daughter Shammiel. The installation explores the interplay between biology and society and particularly the concept of male pregnancy.

“In this particular installation, I am re-envisioning the Lab Gallery at Roger Smith Hotel as a warm human incubator, in contrast to the cold exterior of Manhattan, yet concurrently reflecting its sterility. This is a new way to present You Cannot… I Wish You Could that works with my current sensibilities while still staying true to the original sculptures.”

“During my pregnancy with my daughter, and afterwards when I was nursing her, I noticed how curious her father was about my experiences,” recalls Amorós. “I wanted to create a piece around motherhood, and the unbridgeable gulf between the male and female bodies, specifically in the area of reproduction. Then I began to imagine ways in which that gulf might be bridged.”

The installation is comprised of eleven “clones” of a new kind of human body: a pregnant female torso with the same male head attached to each of them. The casts were taken from a mold made from the artist’s body one week before she gave birth to her daughter. The floor beneath and around the body-casts is covered with soft, pale sand referencing the earth as a foundation for biological manipulation.

Composer Meshell Ndegeocello created a piece of music made specifically for the installation, which reinforces the magical quality that many of us feel when confronting the wonders (or monsters?) of modern science.

Grimanesa Amorós is an interdisciplinary artist with diverse interests in the fields of social history, scientific research and critical theory, which have greatly influenced her work. She often makes use of sculpture, video, and lighting to create works that illuminate our notions of personal identity and community. Amorós utilizes her art as an agent for empowerment to involve viewers from all different backgrounds and communities. She was born in Lima. Lives and works in New York City and Peru.

THE LAB (for installation + performance art) is a New York based, converted storefront turned fishbowl producing many performance art and installation exhibitions annually. Aimed at the furious midtown foot traffic, THE LAB’s programming is designed to confront modern relationships between art and audience and seeks to force interaction between high energy, “outrospective” exhibitions and nearly 25,000 daily passersby.
