ARTIST STATEMENT (English / Espanol)

This work was proposed as an installation for the Maucker Union Center of Multicultural Education at Iowa State University. The form of this piece is dynamic. A red circle acts as a nucleus, from which the movement of the petals flows. The repetition of color draws the viewer's eye across the frieze. The sensation is of a radiating explosion; the energy of the red nucleus appears to draw the petals back to their origin, only to expel them in a fugue of color. The motion in this piece is representative of the movement of people. I have entitled the work "This World," as it illustrates the constant velocity that propels us along our diverse yet intertwined paths. The particolored effusion of petals speaks to the wide variety of individuals who will pass beneath the installation every day. I want viewers to recognize their own individuality in this piece, as well as their inclusion within larger communities.
